Nordic Energy Regulators call for support from the Nordic Council of Ministers (12.10.2009)

NordREG (Nordic Energy Regulators) emphasises the importance of the process towards a common Nordic retail market for electricity. To obtain involvement from all relevant stakeholders, NordREG calls for support from the Nordic Council of Ministers.

In a report that was submitted to the Nordic Council of Ministers in May 2009, NordREG suggested that the suppliers in the Nordic countries should be able to offer electricity to consumers in any Nordic country on equal terms by 2015. The Nordic Energy Regulators accentuate the benefits in a letter to the Council

- Harmonized solutions in all Nordic countries will lead to efficiency improvement, reduction of operational costs and increased innovation in all the Nordic retail markets, says Marit Lundteigen Fossdal, chair of NordREG.

According to NordREG’s assessment, the operational cost related to a harmonised Nordic retail market will over time be lower than the total cost of operating separate national markets. Economies of scale and increased competition among the providers of IT solutions will be the main drivers

The preparation of detailed harmonized solutions requires active participation and cooperation of all relevant stakeholders. This means that stakeholders like branch organizations, suppliers, network companies and IT-providers must allocate sufficient resources to this process.

- NordREG is a driving force in the harmonization process. In order to ensure the necessary involvement from all relevant stakeholders, NordREG calls for backing from the Nordic Council of Ministers, says Lundteigen Fossdal.
